In the year 1826, a retired lieutenant of the British Royal Navy, Robert William Hale Hardy, navigated the waters of the Gulf of California in search of pearls and precious metals. During his journey, he came across the coastline of what is now Puerto Peñasco and the vast desert that surrounded it. Among the striking features of this land was a prominent hill near the shore. Captivated by its rugged beauty, Hardy named the spot "Rocky Point," a name that has stood the test of time and remains part of the town's identity.

Fast forward to the early 1900s, Puerto Peñasco was a pristine, untouched haven for fishing. Adventurous fishermen were drawn to its abundant waters, teeming with fish and shrimp. Among these early pioneers were Yugoslavian immigrants who saw incredible potential in the shrimp market. They worked tirelessly to develop a thriving industry, laying the foundation for what would become one of Puerto Peñasco's most important economic pillars. Their vision and hard work turned this once-sleepy village into a bustling fishing hub.

From a Fishing Village to a Beloved Tourist Destination

As the years went by, Puerto Peñasco's allure began to attract visitors from far and wide. Its location, nestled between the Sonoran Desert and the azure waters of the Sea of Cortez, offered a unique blend of natural beauty and tranquility. By the mid-20th century, American tourists began to discover the charm of Rocky Point. Its proximity to the U.S. border made it an ideal getaway, especially for those seeking a slice of paradise just a short drive from Arizona.

Tourism began to flourish, bringing with it resorts, restaurants, and activities that catered to the growing number of visitors. But despite its development, Puerto Peñasco retained its authenticity. The town’s roots as a fishing village remain visible today, with fresh seafood markets, local festivals, and the warm hospitality of its people.

The Legendary Pinacate Biosphere Reserve

No visit to Puerto Peñasco is complete without exploring its natural wonders, particularly the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Pinacate and Gran Desierto de Altar Biosphere Reserve. This awe-inspiring desert landscape, with its dramatic craters and unique ecosystems, once served as a training ground for Apollo astronauts preparing for lunar missions. Walking these rugged trails, visitors can feel the same sense of exploration that defines the town's history.

The Pinacate’s historical significance goes back even further. In the late 17th century, the famed Jesuit missionary Father Eusebio Francisco Kino ascended one of the reserve’s volcanic peaks. From this vantage point, he confirmed that California was indeed a peninsula, a revelation that would shape maps and exploration for years to come. The blend of natural beauty and historical importance makes the Pinacate Reserve a must-see for any visitor.

The reserve isn’t just a testament to the natural beauty of the region; it’s a reminder of how Puerto Peñasco has always been a place of discovery from Robert Hardy’s early explorations to the present day.

When most people think of Rocky Point, they picture its golden beaches, crystal-clear waters, and vibrant local culture. But nestled in the heart of this charming seaside town lies a story that’s as intriguing as it is mysterious. Imagine this: during the height of the Prohibition era, one of the most infamous gangsters in American history, Al Capone, may have found refuge in this very town.

The Rumor of Al Capone in Puerto Peñasco

The story goes that Al Capone, the notorious mob boss known for his role in Chicago’s bootlegging empire, sought sanctuary in Puerto Peñasco (Rocky Point) after facing mounting pressure from U.S. law enforcement. This was during the Prohibition era (1920-1933), when alcohol was banned in the United States, creating a lucrative black-market industry that criminals like Capone were quick to exploit. With Puerto Peñasco located just a few hours south of the U.S. border, it’s easy to see why this remote fishing village could have been an appealing hideout.

Legends suggest that Capone didn’t just come to Puerto Peñasco for a quick escape. Some believe he operated smuggling routes through the region, taking advantage of its proximity to the Gulf of California and its then-limited oversight. The tranquility and isolation of the area would have provided the perfect cover for a man looking to stay out of the public eye while still managing his underground empire.

Whether true or not, this anecdote has cemented the hotel’s status as a must-visit destination for history buffs, adventure seekers, and those with a penchant for the extraordinary.

True or not, the rumor of Al Capone’s ties to Puerto Peñasco adds a layer of mystique to an already enchanting destination. It’s a reminder that this seaside gem is more than just a place to relax and soak up the sun; it’s a town with stories to tell, secrets to uncover, and history to explore.
